life and work

Maimbourg, born in Nancy, which was part of the Holy Roman Empire at the time, joined the Jesuit order on May 20, 1626, initially living in the Jesuit college that his wealthy parents had founded in Nancy. After a period of practice in Dijon from 1630 to 1634, he studied theology in Paris until 1636 and then at the Roman Gregoriana until 1638 . He was ordained in 1637 , taught rhetoric and philosophy at the Jesuit college in Rouen for the next ten years and made his profession on May 29, 1644 . From 1643 he was a preacher in Bourges , then moved to Paris to the Collège Clermont .

During this time he came into conflict with the Jansenists , especially because of their translation of the Bible, and wrote polemical writings from 1667 to 1673. When he vehemently opposed the dispute between Louis XIV and Pope Innocent XI. to use the Gallican articles for the king, the Pope, or his order general Juan Pablo Oliva , banished him from the Jesuit order in 1681. For his part, the king gave him a pension and the right to live in the Abbey of St-Victor in Paris.

Maimbourg became a historian of whom Voltaire regretted that he had been neglected too much, whereas Pierre Bayle sharply criticized his Histoire du Calvinisme , initially published under a pseudonym . But the name of the author soon became known and his books were banned in France from 1683. Maimbourg's Histoire du Luthéranisme , which is considered to be of little scientific importance, prompted his opponents to present comprehensive counter-works that were scientifically much longer lasting. In this case, the work of Veit Ludwig von Seckendorff Commentarius historicus et apologeticus de Lutheranismo seu de reformatione is considered "for a long time to be fundamental to any preoccupation with the Reformation"; it was published in Leipzig from 1688 to 1692.

Several of his historical works (see the labeling below) were placed on the index of forbidden books by the Roman Catholic Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in several decrees between 1680 and 1687 .
