Louis Riedel (dialect poet)

Karl Louis Riedel (born April 29, 1847 in Gelenau , † March 31, 1919 in Plauen ) was a German dialect poet . He is considered the founder of the Vogtland dialect poetry.

Riedel, who came from a poor background, attended the village and factory school in Gelenau. As a child he had to work in the cotton mill, where he received two hours of lessons after a twelve-hour working day. The pedagogically gifted Riedel later switched to the teachers' college in Annaberg and got his first job as a teacher in Gottesberg in the Vogtland . In 1867 he went to the school in Meßbach , where he worked for several decades.

Riedel wrote more than 30 small volumes with dialect poems, stories and small plays. He also worked on the first issues of the calendar published by Woldemar Müller for the Ore Mountains and Vogtland.

His son Max Riedel carried on the father's tradition and also published small volumes with his own stories and poems in the Vogtland dialect.
