The place was first mentioned in 1410 as Espech . The name Espech means place in / on Espich (aspen grove). In 1467 there was a farm and a farm . A loose square village with a block corridor developed from this . Meßbach belonged to the Plauen office until the 19th century . The community later belonged to the administrative authority of Plauen and then to the district of Plauen until it was incorporated into the then still independent city of Plauen on January 1, 1994, shortly before the district reform .

From 1867 to 1910 Louis Riedel , the founder of the Vogtland dialect poetry, taught at the school in Meßbach.
