Kürbitz is a district of the municipality Weischlitz in the Vogtlandkreis .

geography

The village is located in the eastern outskirts of the municipality Weischlitz, on both sides of the course of the White Elster .

Neighboring towns of Kürbitz are the three Plauen districts of Straßberg in the north, Thiergarten in the northeast and Meßbach in the east, the Oelsnitz district of Taltitz in the southeast and the districts of Oberweischlitz in the south, Unterweischlitz in the southwest and Kröstau in the northwest, which also belong to the municipality of Weischlitz .

Kürbitz was first mentioned in 1225 as "Kurbiz"; -itz is a place name ending with Slavic origin.
The place belonged to the Plauen office until the 19th century .

On January 1, 1999, it was incorporated into Weischlitz.

Culture and sights

In the center of the village, an old arch bridge has been connecting the two districts on the banks of the Weisse Elster river for 700 years . With its 7 arches over 46 meters long, the structure is one of the oldest stone arch bridges in Germany. Near the bridge is the former manor of the Kürbitz manor , the core building of which was built as a moated castle at a river crossing of the White Elster at the time of settlement . Kürbitz is also known for its Salvatorkirche (built between 1624 and 1626). The imposing sacred building with the octagonal tower dominates the view of the town from afar. The interior of the church impresses with its rich furnishings. Opposite the manor there is a historic stone cross in the retaining wall of the church , not far from it are two old herds of greaves . A model of the Salvatorkirche can be found in the miniature exhibition area Klein-Vogtland .

The village's pond surrounds an island on which there was once an early German fortification . The castle pond is located at the local border, in the direction of Plauen . The Burgteich plateau is the oldest nature reserve in the Vogtland .

mythology

Inside the church is the tombstone of Jobst von Feilitzsch († 1511). According to legend, the knight killed a dragon that was up to mischief in the woods around Kürbitz. The relief shows the hero with sword and armor, with the slain monster at his feet .

Events

Every year, the so-called "lion spectacle", the widely known over the Vogtland beyond traditional meeting place active driver of a Kürbitz in Simson SR2 - mopeds instead.
