Louis Toussaint

Hermann Friedrich Louis Toussaint (* 1826 in Königsberg (Prussia) , † 1887 in Düsseldorf ) was a German genre painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

From 1845 to 1851 Toussaint was a student of Ludwig Rosenfelder at the Königsberg Art Academy . On October 2, 1851, he continued his studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . Theodor Hildebrandt was his most important teacher there until around 1852 . After beginning history painting, he switched to entertaining genre painting in the mid-1850s and created - often using sophisticated lighting effects - numerous depictions of children and families, which he exhibited in Düsseldorf, Berlin, Bremen, Hanover, Magdeburg and Leipzig and some of them through Illustrations in magazines found wider circulation. Toussaint was mainly active in Düsseldorf, where he belonged to the artists' association Malkasten . He was also active as a playwright for the paint box stage . For example, he created the farce Die Mumie , which set the stage on November 16, 1870, and the farce Das Ständchen , which was performed on February 13, 1875. He also worked in the Willingshausen painters' colony .
