Louis Vander Snickt (born February 24, 1837 in Geraardsbergen , Belgium , † October 20, 1911 ) was a Belgian zoologist . His main interests were poultry and small animals. He was the first director of the zoological garden in Düsseldorf .

Life

Vander Snickt was born as the eldest of five children in a large farming family in Geraardsbergen. He therefore had a lot of contact with the local (small) cattle breeds. He attended l'Institution de Melle with a focus on commercial studies. When he was seventeen years old, his father died. He left school to run his parents' farm. He obtained exotic animals through an uncle in England and started a pet shop. At the same time he qualified himself in many areas, including fishing and hunting .

Through his knowledge and many contacts, he became director of the zoological garden in Ghent in 1871 . In addition, he continued to work as a trader and became increasingly interested in local animal breeds. In 1876 he took the place of the zoo director in newly built zoo in the city of Dusseldorf on. As promised subsidies did not materialize, he moved back to Brussels in 1878 . Due to health problems, he reduced his activity in the commercial sector. From 1883 he was editor-in-chief of the magazine Chasse et Pêche . The ponds of Hertoginnendal near Brussels were made available to him to improve fish farming.

Poultry science

In addition to his interest in dogs and fish, Vander Snickt focused on poultry: chickens, pigeons and exotic small birds. He was a sought-after judge. He emphasized that animals with useful aspects should also fully possess and keep these aspects. The first description of the typical crow call of the Bergischen crows is known from Vander Snickt . Many of his drawings are still the basis for breed standards for Belgian breeds to this day. In 1891 he was Edward Brown on his "Report on the Poultry Industry in Belgium".
