Louis Wethli
Louis Wethli (born October 16, 1842 in Zurich ; † February 21, 1914 there ) was a Swiss sculptor .
life and work
Louis Wethli was the son of a stonemason and learned his trade in his parents' business. When Wethli was barely twenty, his father died and he had to take over the business. From 1860 to 1864 he studied sculpture at the ETH Zurich .
Wethli had the architect Albert Meyer (1845–1903) build a residential and commercial building for himself and his family on Zeltweg 62. Wethli was the father of Louis Wethli junior (1867-1940) who also became a sculptor and created funerary monuments. The sculptor Julius Schwyzer (1876–1929) was an apprentice at Wethli for three years.
Wethli delivered the gravestones he designed not only in Zurich and in large parts of Switzerland, but also abroad. Some of the marble figures produced in series in the Wolfgottesacker cemetery come from his workshop.
Wethli created the Polish monument at Rapperswil Castle in 1869 and the battle memorial on the Zürichberg in 1899 and the grave monument for Conrad Ferdinand Meyer in Kilchberg .
