Louis de Chalon-Châtel-Guyon (* 1448 in Nozeroy ; † March 2, 1476 in the Battle of Grandson ) was the eldest son of Louis de Chalon, prince d'Orange and his second wife Éléonore d'Armagnac ( House Chalon ). As one of Charles the Bold's confidants , he was accepted into the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1468 .

Life

In 1461 he was made Viscount de Besançon and Seigneur de Châtel-Guyon by his father. This also sent him to the Burgundian court, where he lived as a page in the vicinity of Charles the Bold . In his will, his father made him a universal heir, after he had awarded his son from his first marriage the Principality of Orange and his youngest son the property in Vaud , and was thus limited to Nozeroy and Châtel-Guyon. Louis defied his father's will, took possession of the entire inheritance and found support from Duke Philip the Good . A lengthy court case followed, from which Louis emerged partially victorious in 1475 - again due to the support he received from the Duke, now Charles the Bold.

In 1465 Philip the Good knighted him, in 1469 Charles the Bold accepted him into the Order of the Golden Fleece - he had been elected as a substitute member in 1468 in the event that the Duke of Normandy refused to join, which was also the case the following year happened. In the same year (1468) he took part in the battle of the Pas de l'arbre d'or, then in the siege of Neuss (1474/75), while the Swiss attacked his property in Vaud. He was charged with the defense of Franche-Comté , defeated the Swiss at Pontarlier and took Jougne from them. He fell at the Battle of Grandson while leading the Burgundian cavalry into the Swiss lines.

Louis de Chalon remained single, but left an illegitimate son with Jean de Chalon.
