Life

Louis de La Foye came from a French aristocratic family from Normandy who emigrated to Prussia in the course of the French Revolution . There, Louis became a flagjunker in the Winning Regiment in 1800 . In 1803 he became a member of the Nordsternbund , a literary circle in which he became friends with Adelbert von Chamisso, who also came from a French aristocratic family .

At the end of 1804 de La Foye returned to Caen to support his now sick mother. From there he sent his resignation letter to the Prussian army. In the following years he tried to translate literature before he devoted himself to the natural sciences. In 1812 he encouraged his friend Adelbert von Chamisso to take a similar turn. In July 1811, de La Foye got a job as a mathematics professor in Bayeux . His scientific career then took him to the Academy of Sciences in Caen.
