Stefanus Lourens Muller (born September 27, 1917 in Beaufort West , Cape Province , South African Union ; † April 30, 2005 in Somerset West , Western Cape ) was a South African lawyer and politician of the Nasionale Party (NP), who was, among other things, several times minister in various departments .

Life

Stefanus Lourens Muller initially worked for the SASH Suid-Afrikaanse Spoorweë en Hawens railway company and then studied law . After graduation, he settled as a lawyer in Robertson . At the beginning of the 1960s he began his political career when he joined the National Party (NP). In the elections of October 8, 1961, he was elected a member of the Chamber of Deputies (Volksraad van Suid-Afrika) and represented the constituency of Ceres until 1979 . After the election of March 30, 1966, he took over his first government offices in the Verwoerd II cabinet and was initially Deputy Minister for Justice in 1966. In the subsequent Vorster I cabinet he was between September 13, 1966 and 1968, both Vice Minister for the Police and Vice Minister for Economics and Vice Minister for Finance.

In the course of a cabinet reshuffle, Muller replaced PK Le Roux as Minister of the Interior in 1968 and held this ministerial office until April 22, 1970. At the same time, he replaced the then Prime Minister Balthazar Johannes Vorster as Minister of Police in 1968 and held this ministerial post in the cabinet until April 29, 1974 Vorster II . In the Vorster II cabinet, he also served as Minister of Economics from May 18, 1970 to April 29, 1974. In the Vorster III cabinet formed on April 29, 1974 , he finally took over the post of transport minister , which he also held in the Botha I cabinet from October 10, 1978 until he was replaced by Chris Heunis in February 1979 .

After he left the Nasionale Party, he joined the March 20, 1982 by the former NP-Minister Andries Treurnicht founded Konserwatiewe Party at (KP). However, he no longer held any political offices.

Lourens Muller was married to the soprano Hanlie van Niekerk.
