Love Is for Suckers is the fifth studio album by the American hard rock band Twisted Sister , released in 1987 . It was originally made as a solo album by singer Dee Snider, but was released as a group product under pressure from the record company. In fact, apart from Snider, hardly any member of the band was involved in the recordings. Instead, bassist and singer Kip Winger and guitarist Reb Beach , as well as Steve Whitman and Jimmy Chalfant from the band Kix ( backing vocals ) worked on it. However, in the credits for the released album, the musicians of Twisted Sister were listed as contributors in their usual roles.

Emergence

Twisted Sister was in 1985 with Come Out and Play landed a commercial flop: Although it was the album with the second-best sales figures for Twisted Sister, it is in the United States as a not particularly successful and only managed to place 53 of the Billboard 200 , from which it was eliminated after 17 weeks. In the other important music markets it was only able to reach the hit lists briefly and in the last places ( Great Britain : place 95/1 week) or did not even make the jump into the charts (Germany). In addition, the band had to cancel a badly running US tour with numerous canceled concerts and was then in debt.

After Twisted Sister had taken a musically more commercial path with the album, Dee Snider came to the conclusion that the next album to be released would be even more mainstream and that it should be a solo album . Due to the several months long break in the band's work together, drums AJ Piero had decided to leave the group because he wanted to work on a project called Cities . Joey Franco took his place.

In his book Shut Up and Give Me the Mic , Dee Snider described that the album reflected the commercial character he had envisioned for his solo album, and at the same time was lyrically influenced by his bitter state of mind at the time. He stressed that both his management and the record company had urged him to turn his solo album into a twisted sister album. However, he still worked as if it had been a solo album.

Snider committed guest musicians, including Kip Winger (then bassist in Alice Cooper's band) and Reb Beach (who worked as a studio musician for Fiona , among others ), who were officially only involved in the recordings as background vocalists.

In a 2016 interview, guitarist Jay Jay French said about the making of Love Is for Suckers :

"[...] I listen to that record every once in awhile and I think it's an interesting record. Should it have been a Dee [Snider] solo record? Absolutely. I mean at that point, AJ wasn't in the band and [drummer] Joe Franco played a drum machine on that record so there's no drummer on that record. So technically there's no drummer on the record and the guitar player isn't me or Eddie [Ojeda]! [laughs] So is it a Twisted Sister record? [laughs] I don't say that with any particular rancor. We're past that. There are pretty cool songs on there. It was an ugly time. "

"[...] I listen to the record every now and then and I think it's an interesting record. Should it have been a Dee Snider solo album? Absolutely! I mean, AJ wasn't in the band at the time and Joey Franco was playing a drum computer, so technically there's no drummer on the record and the guitarist isn't me, nor is Eddie Ojeda! So is it a twisted sister album? I say this without any malice. We have that behind us. There are some cool songs on it. It was an ugly time. "

This suggests that the guest musicians involved have invested a lot more work in this album, contrary to the information listed in the credits. The album was recorded at Atlantic Studios in New York City under the direction of record producer Beau Hill . He appeared on 13 August 1987, as the only single was Hot Love decoupled.

reception

Greg Prato of Allmusic.com wrote that Beau Hill gave the album a "strong 80s pop-metal sound" , outstanding were "the tracks" Hot Love, "the title track and" Tonight, "" but the album was "like its predecessor quickly fell off the charts ” .

Michael Rensen ( Rock Hard ) wrote, “Dee Snider, Jay Jay French and the like” had tried “to focus more on catchy sing-along melodies” and “for Love Is For Suckers with Beau Hill, Reb Beach and TNT guitarist Ronnie Le Tekro an illustrious arrangement / production team ” . The result sounds "not quite as convincing as You Can not Stop Rock'n'Roll ('83) or Stay Hungry ('84)," could "with catchy tunes like" Love Is For Suckers "or" I Want This Night (To Last Forever) "but make up some lost ground."

The album only reached number 74 on the Billboard 200 in the USA and was no longer listed after eleven weeks; in Europe it was more successful, at least in terms of placement: 57th place in Great Britain and 59th place in Germany made the album successful, but the listing time was significantly shorter here. After only two weeks, the album disappeared from the British charts.
