Luís Augusto Rebelo da Silva (born April 2, 1822 in Lisbon , † September 19, 1871 ibid) was a Portuguese journalist , historian , novelist and politician .

Life

Luís Augusto Rebelo da Silva was the son of a respected politician. He attended the University of Coimbra and then devoted himself to the historical novel in Lisbon . He became a journalist and soon became editor of the official Diario do Governo newspaper . Since 1848 he was repeatedly elected a member of the Cortes . Here he distinguished himself as a speaker and was appointed Secretary of the State Council in 1849. From 1854 he was a member of the Academy of Sciences in Lisbon . He also worked from 1859 as a professor of patriotic and universal history at the Curso Superior de Letras. In 1859 he also became a member of the General Education Council, in 1862 a member of the First Chamber and in 1869 State Councilor and Minister of the Navy . He died in Lisbon on September 19, 1871 at the age of 49.

Rebelo da Silva wrote several popular historical novels, including Rauço por homizio (Lisbon 1842), Odio velhoHEN CANSA (2 vols., Lisbon 1849) and A mocidade de D. João V (4 vols., Lisbon 1852–53; 2. Edition 3 vol., Postage 1862). The moral image Última corrida de touros reais em Salvaterra (Lisbon 1848) achieved a classic reputation . He also wrote some dramas . Commissioned by the Royal Academy, he continued the great publication on diplomatic relations between Portugal and foreign countries ( Quadro elementar das relações politicas e diplomaticas de Portugal , 18 volumes, Paris and Lisbon 1842-60), begun by the Visconde de Santarém (1791-1856) published volumes 9–11 and 16–18 of this work. He is also the author of a history of Portugal in the 17th and 18th centuries ( História de Portugal nos séculos XVII e XVIII , 5 vols., Lisbon 1860–71).
