Lubomir Szopiński
Lubomir Szopiński (born May 13, 1913 in Kościerzyna , West Prussia , German Empire ; died November 5, 1961 in Kraków ) was a Polish-Kashubian choir director.
Life
Lubomir Szopiński grew up in Kashubia in Poland. He attended the Conservatory in the Free City of Gdansk , where he studied cello, composition and conducting with Kazimierz Wiłkomirski . In 1937 he took over the direction of the "Lutnia" choir in Sopot .
After the German invasion of Poland, he was arrested on September 8, 1939 and deported to the Stutthof concentration camp , from there to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp and then on to Gusen . In Stutthof he received the text Sen więźnia from Zdzisław Karr-Jaworski and composed a camp song on it. In Gusen he sometimes led a prisoner choir.
After the liberation he returned to Kościerzyna and worked as a choir director again. From 1948 he headed a company choir in Wroclaw and in 1958 became the director of the Radio Wrocław radio choir .
Health problems forced him to resign in 1960. Weakened by more than five years in prison, Szopiński died at the age of 48 in a clinic in Kraków.
