The Lucas-Cranach-Strasse 25 building , the former so-called Pabstmannsche Scholarship House , is a listed building in the old town of the Upper Franconian town of Kronach in Bavaria .

Location and description

The building is located at the northwest end of Lucas-Cranach-Straße, opposite the market square. It is a three-story hipped roof building with a sandstone ground floor and two half-timbered upper floors . A wooden statue of the Maria Immaculata is attached to the northeast corner of the first floor . The keystone of stichbogigen front door is a Rocaille - cartridge decorated, bearing the inscription "JCF"; these initials refer to a previous owner of the house, mayor Johann C. Fraaß.

Under the building - as practically under all properties in the old town  - there is a vaulted cellar. While most of these facilities are generally not open to the public, the basement under the Lucas-Cranach-Straße 25 building can be viewed freely.

history

The house at Lucas-Cranach-Straße 25 received its present form after 1773, when two originally separate buildings were combined into one structure. The southern part of the building was built around 1600, its two upper floors with a diamond pattern framework in the second quarter of the 18th century. The northern half of the house was built in 1670 and after the two individual buildings were merged, the two half-timbered floors were added. The front door of the building with the initials of the previous owner Johann C. Fraaß was decorated between 1755 and 1778. In the early 19th century, the wooden house figure was created on the northeast corner of the building.

The name Pabstmannsches Scholarship House goes back to the 1850s. In her will , the widow of the district court assistant, Marie Anna Höpfl, née Pabstmann, bequeathed assets to various foundations that were to be used to support the poor and orphans. Furthermore, in agreement with her two siblings, she decreed that today's building at Lucas-Cranach-Straße 25 should serve as a scholarship foundation for destitute students from Kronach.

The city treasury was located in the building until they moved to the newly built town hall in 1975 .
