Lucian the Wolfbearer is a funeral doom band founded in 2010 .

history

Lucian the Wolfbearer is a studio project founded at the beginning of 2010 by the singer and guitarist of the pagan metal band Benighten Empire Sean Michael Kratz. Kratz, who lives in Cleveland, calls himself "Lucian" as part of the project. For the releases of Lucian the Wolfbearer, Kratz acted repeatedly with guest musicians and cooperated with companies such as Senseless Life Records , Wyrmwood Records and Sepulcral Silence Records . The project debuted in 2013 with the single Song of Blood and Steele and the album Void , both releases were self-published for download. The debut album was praised in international reviews of various webzines of the metal scene . Although it is not a metal album in the musical sense, the text, theme and vocals fill "all the elements that make a modern doom metal band ". The music is "something powerful and meaningful, earthy and unique" that "speaks to an older and more original force than metal could ever succeed". The album has chosen an "atmospherically dark style" that is "great" for telling the "old stories".

With the second album The Haunting , the lasting change in style to Funeral Doom went hand in hand, which was addressed in reviews. The Haunting was received differently, taking this change into account. On the one hand, the album was praised as "an atmospheric curiosity that sifts through the darkest emotional niches in existence", on the other hand as a boring release that focuses solely on "darkness and tribulation" from the loss of folk elements. The single Summerland , released in the same year, was praised as a recommendation for fans of Funeral Doom. Noteworthy is the connection of Funeral Doom with medieval and folkloric elements. Subsequent publications were discussed less often. The album At the Gates of Twilight was criticized by Dante DuVall for Doom-Metal.com as a moderately interesting release, besides “ generic tendencies” he criticized the lack of “complexity”, the album was more suitable for “meditating or falling asleep”. For the same webzine, Mike Liassides praised Paradise , published a year later, for its “wide, calm, heavenly atmosphere”. Sei∂r , published in 2016, was advertised as “hypnotic” and “great” for the webzine Folk-Metal.nl . The release of the album Old Roots in 2019 went unnoticed.

style

Lucian the Wolfbearer's debut was based on Nordic ritual folk . Subsequently reduced scratching the increasingly folk influences and developed the music towards a minimalist Funeral Doom , who with that of artists such as Comatose Vigil , Shape of Despair and Doom: VS is arranging compared. Lyrically, the project focuses on Nordic mythology as well as its own narratives on the subject of the Vikings .

Guitar playing harmonies described as “grumpy” , a reduced rhythmic instrumentation and deep growling are combined with expansive synthesizer tracks and long, perceived as “calming” passages of acoustic guitar and clear vocals mixed in the background. On the other hand, Kratz largely avoided distorted guitars and growling on the debut. Instead, the music is characterized by many acoustic instruments, especially the acoustic guitar, a vocals that are close to Doom Metal and perceived as "rough and earthy", as well as electronic extensions through sampling , keyboard and synthesizer.
