Luciano Laurenzi

Luciano Laurenzi (born June 30, 1902 in Trieste , Austria-Hungary ; died October 25, 1966 in Udine , Italy ) was an Italian university professor , archaeologist , art historian and author . He was director of the Italian Archaeological School in Athens from 1941 to 1943 and was heavily involved in excavations and reconstructions on the Dodecanese islands in the 1930s .

Life, education and work

Luciano Laurenzi graduated from the University of Bologna . From 1925 to 1927 he worked at the Italian Archaeological School in Athens . From 1928 to 1938 he was involved in various functions in an archaeological mission on the island of Kos , which was particularly successful after the earthquake of April 23, 1933, in which large parts of the city ​​of Kos were destroyed, because under the rubble of the city many relics from the Middle Ages, the occupation by the Roman Empire and Hellenism have been found.

After his return from the Dodecanese Islands, he held a leading position in Milan and then returned to the Italian Archaeological School in Athens and took over the management of the institute on July 1, 1941. He was arrested by the henchmen of Nazi Germany the day after the announcement of the Cassibile armistice (September 8, 1943).

Luciano Laurenzi taught Greek and Roman art history in Milan as a professor from 1938 . From 1940 he was a full professor at the University of Pisa until he returned to Athens in 1941. After his return he taught again in Pisa from 1944. From 1946 he was professor of classical art history at the University of Bologna and director of the Museo civico archeologico in Bologna .
