Im Sand bei Rotenburg is the name of a former gravel mining area in a floodplain in the Middle Fulda valley . After the end of the gravel paving, the area with the adjacent areas was designated as a nature reserve. The protected area includes the created gravel pond, an oxbow arm of the Fulda with a stock of pond roses , softwood alluvial forests , reed beds , tall herbaceous meadows , succession areas , fallow land and grassland .

location

The nature reserve is located northwest of Rotenburg on the Fulda in the north-east Hessian district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg . It is bordered in the south by the Fulda and in the north by the railway line from Bebra to Kassel . Administratively, the areas belong to the districts of Braach and Rotenburg of the city of Rotenburg an der Fulda.

In terms of nature , the area is assigned to the “ Rotenburger Fulda Valley ” in the “ Fulda-Werra-Bergland ” of the “ East Hessian Bergland ”.

Protected position

With an ordinance of July 31, 1997 of the Upper Nature Conservation Authority at the Kassel Regional Council , the former gravel pit and its adjacent areas were declared a nature reserve. The purpose of the protection was to protect the habitat of the special flora and fauna occurring here and to encourage their own development. Other reasons for protection were the securing of the oxbow lake area with its reeds and pond rose stocks as well as the guarantee of a near-natural development of the river banks and succession areas. The natural dynamics of the water levels as a result of flood events should be preserved and improved by reactivating a flood channel. The reserve has a size of 10.22 hectares, has the national identifier 1632029 and the WDPA code 318594.

The protected area is located completely in the conservation area "Auenverbund Fulda," belong to the surfaces along the Fulda in several counties. The purpose of the protection of the area designated in 1993 is the preservation of the meadow and bank vegetation types characterized by different levels of moisture penetration, as well as the restoration of near-natural sections of water by converting arable land into extensively used grassland.

Tourist development

The "Auenerlebnispfad" runs between the Fulda and the southern edge of the protected area.

The “Auenerlebnispfad” runs along the Fulda from Rotenburg to the level of the Braach sports field, from which the nature reserve can be viewed.

Protected area

Most of the protected area consists of a gravel lake that has formed in an abandoned gravel mining area. After the exploitation was over in the mid-1990s, renaturation measures followed in sections , with the aim of shaping the bank areas of the resulting gravel pond in such a way that diverse biotopes can form. The nature conservationists believe that the natural design, in conjunction with the existing oxbow lake, has developed a valuable, structurally rich still water .

The protected area in the Fuldaaue offers birds breeding grounds, stepping stones and feeding habitats . Around fifty protected and endangered bird species have been identified. As a result of the construction work and the subsequent vegetation development, the habitats changed, which had an impact on the composition of the species. As regular migrants and winter guests who were observed in the nature reserve, the authors name Sieglinde and Lothar Nitsche in the book "Nature reserves in Hesse, protect-experience-maintain" the little grebe , great egret , cormorant , knäk- , Schnatter- , Krick- , spoon- , Pochard and tufted duck , goosander and osprey .

The area lies in the floodplain of the Fulda. After the floods of January 1995, extensive renaturation work was carried out based on concepts for nature-friendly flood protection . Instead of even higher dams, an increase in the retention potential should be achieved by widening the river . Specifically, new tributaries to the Fulda were created with steep banks, shallow water zones and still water areas and flood channels were restored on the basis of historical maps. The “Im Sand” protected area and other existing quarry ponds were also included in the floodplain reactivation. In addition to the goal of minimizing flooding in the urban area, the ecosystem should also react with increasing biodiversity by designing floodplain structures typical of natural areas .
