Luciano Antonio Portolano (born September 18, 1960 in Agrigento , Sicily ) is a Lieutenant General in the Italian Army . Among other things, he was the commander of the UNIFIL troops in Lebanon and chief of staff at the Allied Joint Force Command Naples . Since September 2019 he has been the commander of the operational command of the Italian armed forces .

Military career

Portolano was trained as an officer at the Military Academy in Modena and Turin from 1979 to 1983 and then served as platoon leader and company commander as well as battalion and regiment commander for the Bersaglieri , first in the armored division or armored brigade Ariete and then in the Bersaglieri brigade Garibaldi . He completed general staff training at Civitavecchia and Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth , Kansas , as well as various other courses. He served in various functions with the Army General Staff in Rome.

From 2007 to 2010 Portolano was the Italian military attaché at the Italian embassy in London . From 2010 to 2012 he was Brigadier General in command of the Mechanized Brigade Sassari , and from 2012 to 2014 he was head of the operations department in the Armed Forces Operations Command. From July 2014 to July 2016, Portolano was Major General in command of the UNIFIL force in Lebanon. From September 2016 to August 2019 he was Lieutenant General Chief of Staff at the JFC Naples. On August 6, 2019, he was designated by the Italian government as the commander of the operational command of the armed forces in Rome. The change of command took place on the following September 2nd.

Portolano took part in numerous foreign missions: from 1990 to 1992 he was a military observer in the Persian Gulf, in the years after that he took part in international operations in the former Yugoslavia as a task force commander , and in 2003 also in Iraq. In 2011 and 2012, as commander of the Sassari Brigade, he was commander of Regional Command West of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan ; for this mission he was accepted as an officer in the Legion of Merit .
