Lucien Firmin Gekiere (born October 22, 1912 in Moorsele , † April 28, 1990 in Kortrijk ) was a Belgian composer and conductor .

Life

As the son of a military musician, he was closely connected to music from a very early age. He received practical instruction from his father, a cornetist at the Groot Harmonieorkest van de Belgische Gidsen in Brussels . At the age of 11 he joined the Moorsele wind orchestra as a trumpeter. When a music school was opened in Menen , he went to Robert Vantieghem and received advanced trumpet lessons, around the same time privately taking piano lessons. When he won first prizes in solo competitions at the music school, he then looked for further advanced lessons. He came to the trumpet virtuoso Julien Duquesne , a soloist with the NIR Orchestra, who gave him the final touches in trumpet lessons. He later made the acquaintance of Herman Roelstraete , who gave him instructions in harmony , counterpoint and fugue .

After the Second World War he was engaged with a quartet (trumpet, baritone, double bass and piano) by the Dutch-speaking radio (NIR) in Belgium for several programs. For this purpose he composed around 60 works. He later became the conductor of a wind orchestra, which was also regularly heard on the radio. Gekiere also began to compose for this medium, especially since he came into contact with Guy Duijck , the conductor of the Muziekkapel van de Belgische Zeemacht in Ostend .
