Lucien Sittler

Lucien Sittler (born May 3, 1905 in Haguenau , † December 17, 1987 in Colmar ) was a French (Alsatian) teacher, writer, city archivist and editor.

Life

Lucien Sittler attended elementary school from 1911 and then, until 1923, the grammar school in Hagenau. He then studied history and geography at the University of Strasbourg until 1926 and then became a teacher in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines ( Markirch ) and Forbach . In 1933 he received his doctorate in history from the University of Strasbourg. In 1934 Sittler became the city archivist of Colmar. In 1939/1940 he did military service and was a participant in the war. In 1945 he worked as an organizer of the refugee system in Colmar. From 1946 he edited the New Alsatian Calendar . In 1950 he became a co-founder of the Historical and Literary Society of Colmar and editor-in-chief of the Colmar Yearbook (until 1972). In 1951 Sittler was a co-founder and secretary (later vice and honorary president) of the Association of Alsatian History Societies.

Awards

In 1961 he received the Palmes académiques . In 1971 he was awarded the Johann-Peter-Hebel-Prize of the State of Baden-Württemberg .
