Lucien von Römer

Lucien Sophie Albert Marie von Römer (born August 23, 1873 in Kampen , Netherlands , † December 23, 1965 in Malang , Indonesia ) was a Dutch sexologist , doctor and botanist .

Life

Von Römer grew up in Kampen in his childhood. He studied medicine at the University of Leiden and the University of Amsterdam until 1903 . He practiced as a neurologist in the Netherlands. His medical interest was in part on the subject of homosexuality . He worked in Berlin with the German sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld and with Albert Moll .

In the magazine Yearbook for Sexual Intermediate Levels , he published articles regularly, with his first article published there by the French King Henry III. and whose sexual identity acted. As early as 1902 he published articles in the magazine Jahrbuch für Sexuelle Zwischenstufen on anti-homosexual activities in Holland in the 18th century and a study on androgyny . A dissertation on these topics was rejected by the University of Amsterdam.

In 1909/1910 von Römer took part in a scientific expedition to New Guinea . He discovered a number of plants, some of which were later named after him. In 1913 he left the Netherlands and moved to the Dutch East Indies . where he lived until the end of his life in Malang on the island of Java and had a practice for psychiatry. In 1921 he married the pianist Eugenie Gallois and had a son.
