Lucius Jacques Dupré

Lucius Jacques Dupré (born April 18, 1822 in St. Landry Parish , Louisiana , † March 5, 1869 in Opelousas , Louisiana) was an American lawyer and Confederate politician . His brother Alcée Louis Dupré (* 1840) was a lieutenant in the Confederate Army and aide-de-camp from Major General Franklin Gardner (1823–1873).

Career

Lucius Jacques Dupré was born and raised in St. Landry Parish approximately seven years after the end of the British-American War . He studied law and was admitted to the bar. On November 23, 1843 he married Caroline Victoire Vanhille (1826-1896), daughter of Caroline Fontenot (1800-1841) and Benoit Vanhille (1780-1837). At the time of his marriage he was working as a public prosecutor. The couple had five children together: Jacques Lucius (1844–1863), Laperle (* 1847), Laurent (1849–1905), Edmonia (* 1856) and Gilbert (* 1858). In 1853 he was a State Court judge in Louisiana. He also had a political career. In 1861 he took part as a delegate to the Louisiana Secession Assembly, where he voted for the secession of his state. After the outbreak of the civil war , he enlisted in the Confederate Army. In November 1861 he was elected to the first Confederate Congress for the fourth constituency of Louisiana , where he took up his post on February 18, 1862. Dupré successfully ran for the Second Confederate Congress and then worked there until 1865. He died about four years after the end of the war in Opelousas and was buried there in St. Landry Church Cemetery .
