action

Jack and Jim are good buddies, but they both fall in love with Gertrude. Gertie marries Jim, and at their wedding the guest Jack sighs: Happy Jim, how I envy you! But Gertie is a horrible cook and at the same time very easily irritable. When Jim complains, one or the other piece of kitchen equipment lands on his head. Meanwhile, Jack sits alone at home and languishes at Gertie's picture. So some time goes by.

One day Jack receives news that Jim has fallen victim to an acute stomach ailment. Jack takes his chance and marries the widow. He is no better off than Jim, and when he spurns Gertie's coffee, dishes are thrown at him too, before Gertie leaves the room indignantly. Looking at his portrait with the mourning ribbon, Jack mumbles again: Happy Jim, how I envy you!

Production notes

The script is based on a popular ragtime song with a text by Charles Horowitz :

“By chance we found we loved the same sweet maid (…) Jim was happy, I a bachelor stayed (…) Ah, Lucky Jim, how I envied him! (...) Years rolled on, poor Jim passed on to heaven, With grief and sorrow in his grave was laid. When time drug by I married his dear widow, Jim was lucky, I unlucky stayed. Ah, lucky Jim, how I envied him! Ah, lucky Jim, how I envied him! "

“We happened to love the same woman (…) Jim was lucky, I remained a bachelor (…) Oh, happy Jim, how I envy him! (…) Years went by, Jim went to heaven, he was buried in sadness and tears. When the (mourning) time was over I married his dear widow. Jim was happy, I was unhappy. Oh, happy Jim, how I envy him! "
