Ludwig Baldass

Ludwig Baldass , until 1918 Ludwig von Baldass (born February 8, 1887 in Vienna ; † November 20, 1963 there ), was an Austrian art historian .

Life

He studied art history in Graz, Halle, Munich and Vienna . After receiving his doctorate in 1911 at the University of Vienna under Max Dvorák , he was employed by the Kunsthistorisches Museum in October 1911 and worked for the picture gallery. There he became curator in 1918 and was director of the picture gallery until his retirement in 1949. In addition, he completed his habilitation in 1926 at the University of Vienna, where he was also appointed adjunct professor in 1934.

He was married to Paula Wagner (1899–1974), daughter of Otto Wagner junior and granddaughter of the architect Otto Wagner .

Baldassgasse in Leopoldau ( 21st district ) was named after him in 1973 .
