Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Cathedral (Ajaccio)
The Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption cathedral is a Catholic cathedral in Ajaccio , the capital of the island of Corsica . It belongs to the diocese of Ajaccio and is also called La Madonuccia by the locals .
location
It is located in the old town of Ajaccio, on the north side of Rue Forcioli Conti . A square extends to the south and is open to the Mediterranean Sea to the south .
Architecture and history
The church consecrated to St. Mary was built from 1554 on the site of a previous building and finally consecrated in 1593 under Bishop Giulio Giustiniani . It is designed in the style of the Venetian Renaissance . The floor plan is laid out in the form of a cross. The entrance portal is made of white Carrara marble . Above the portal is the coat of arms of Bishop Giustiniani.
There is a large main altar in the church. It was originally located in Lucca and came to Ajaccio as a gift from Elisa Bonaparte , a sister of Napoleon. In the two side aisles of the cathedral there are three side altars in their own chapels. The perspective trompe l'oeil paintings in the church are remarkable . In addition, a painting Vierge au Sacré-Cœur by Eugène Delacroix in 1822 is in the cathedral.
In 1764, Laetitia Ramolino and Carlo Buonaparte , who later became parents of Napoleon Bonaparte, married in the cathedral . On July 21, 1771, the one-year-old Napoleon Bonaparte, who later became the French emperor, was baptized in the church . At the same time, his sister Maria-Anna, who was just over a month old, was baptized, but she died a short time later. The marble baptismal font with a bronze crown has been preserved. Sponsors were Laurent Giubega and Gertruda Paravicini .
On the left side of the entrance there is an inscription plaque with a quote from Napoleon. As a last word, Napoleon is said to have uttered: If my corpse is banished in the same way as my person is banished, then I would like to be buried in the Ajaccio cathedral. Napoleon's tomb, however, is in the Paris Invalides and not in Ajaccio Cathedral. However, other members of the Bonaparte family are buried here.
On September 15, 1993, the cathedral was registered as a Monument historique under the number PA00099058.
