biography

Giulio Giustiniani was probably born in Chios in 1543 to Pietro and Maria Giustiniani. The parents belonged to two different branches of the Giustiniani family from Genoa . In addition to ruling the island of Chios, members of the Giustiniani family played a leading role in the political life of the Republic of Genoa . The mother was also the sister of Cardinal Vincenzo Giustiniani and the aunt of another Cardinal, Benedetto .

Giulio wanted to go to Italy to complete his studies. In 1566 Sultan Suleyman I occupied the island and the family was captured. An exemption could only be obtained after 4 years. After his release, Giulio traveled first to Perugia and then to Pisa to continue his studies, which he completed as a Doctor of Law . On September 28, 1587 he was appointed Bishop of Ajaccio and in October 1587 he was ordained (exact date unknown).

In Ajaccio he reorganized the religious structures and took care of the reconstruction of the cathedral . He supported the population against the claims of the Genoese feudal lords. On the orders of the Pope, Giulio had to travel to Rome in early 1616. After leaving, he suddenly fell ill and died on April 18, 1616 in Livorno .
