Vincenzo Giustiniani (Cardinal)

Vincenzo Giustiniani O.P. (* August 1516 in Chios in the Aegean Sea ; † October 28, 1582 in Rome ) was Magister General of the Dominican Order and Cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Giustiniani came from an originally Genoese family. He entered the Dominican order and was elected its general magister on May 29, 1558. As such, he took part in the Council of Trent . On behalf of the Milan Senate and the Pope, he was envoy to Philip II of Spain .

He was elevated to cardinal status by Pope Pius V in the consistory of May 17, 1570 and initially retained the office of general magister until the general chapter of the order elected a successor in 1570. The Pope awarded him the cardinal's hat on January 26, 1571 and appointed him cardinal priest with the titular church of San Nicola fra le Immagini . As a cardinal Giustiniani took part in the conclave of 1572 , from which Gregory XIII. emerged as Pope. In 1579 he moved to the titular church of Santa Sabina . He became abbot of San Sirio in Genoa . He supported and visited the Archbishop of Toledo Bartolomé Carranza de Miranda OP, when he was accused of heresy by the Spanish Inquisition and imprisoned in Castel Sant'Angelo .

Vincenzo Giustiniani died in Rome in 1582 and was buried there in the Dominican church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva .

He was the uncle of Cardinal Benedetto Giustiniani (1554-1621, appointed in 1586) and its eponymous brother Vincenzo Giustiniani (1564-1637), whose collection of paintings, the Giustiniani collection , in 1815 for future construction of the Gemäldegalerie (Berlin) was bought .
