Live and act

Ludwig Doermer was born as the son of a forester in Gießen and studied natural sciences, mathematics and geography at the university there . After the state examination in 1888, he took on an apprenticeship at the Johanneum School of Academics a year later . In 1900 he moved to the upper secondary school at Holstentor , where he taught until 1929. Doermer, who was promoted to head teacher after completing his doctorate in 1902, became involved in school politics early on. He also took part in the further development of pedagogical concepts for comprehensive educational teaching. The pedagogue belonged to various associations such as the association for the promotion of mathematical and scientific teaching and the board of the federal government for school reform . As an author, he wrote several chemical textbooks, which were widely used in many editions.

After the headmaster Albrecht Wilhelm Thaer had been drafted into military service during the First World War , Doermer took over the position of his deputy director at the secondary school. He expanded the range of natural science subjects and offered advanced elective courses to particularly interested students. Doermer, who was highly regarded for his scientific and educational work, completed his habilitation in 1918. In the same year he was elected member of the teachers' council. From 1929 he represented all Hamburg teachers there as a member of the high school authorities . Doermer helped establish an academic education for elementary school teachers, build the superstructure of the elementary schools, the student selection and several new school buildings. From August 1, 1931 to 1933, he held the office of the state school board. After the National Socialists had downgraded him to a degree on the basis of the law to restore the professional civil service , he voluntarily ended his service.

During the Second World War , Doermer's apartment in Hamburg was destroyed by bombs, after which he moved back to Giessen. After the war ended, the Hamburg school authorities reappointed him to the state school board in August 1945. Due to health problems, however, he left office at the end of 1945. Doermer, who had been married to Marie Krüß since 1905, with whom he had a son and a daughter, died in Upper Hesse in July 1952 .
