Ludwig Hess (born October 18, 1760 in Zurich ; † April 13, 1800 or April 16, 1800 there ) was a Swiss landscape painter and engraver .

Life

Ludwig Hess, son of a butcher, first learned his father's profession in order to continue the family business. In 1785 Hess became a guild clerk for the Aries guild and in 1790 a councilor.

Dealing with Heinrich Wüest , with whom he had had lessons since 1778, and Salomon Gessner , with whom he had studied since 1784, encouraged his talent. He finally gave up his profession and visited Florence and Rome in 1794 . Of his landscapes, borrowed from the Alps and Italy, the works “Der Montblanc”, “Das Rütli” and “Die Tellskapelle” deserve special mention. After 1798 he also etched landscapes in copper. Ludwig Hess married Anna Barbara Wegmann on May 2, 1790 (* September 25, 1764).

A biography of Ludwig Hess, believed to have been lost until 2005, was rediscovered in the graphic collection of the ETH Zurich in connection with documents by Carl Gotthard Grass (1767–1814).
