Ludwig Hirschfeld (writer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ludwig Hirschfeld (born May 21, 1882 in Vienna , † between November 7, 1942 and May 4, 1945 in Auschwitz concentration camp ) was an Austrian writer, journalist and theater secretary who lived in Vienna.

Life

Theater program: "The woman everyone is looking for" (1928)

Ludwig Hirschfeld worked as a journalist for the Neue Freie Presse and from 1918 to 1925 as editor-in-chief of the Viennese illustrated bi-monthly publication for art, literature and fashion "Moderne Welt", which was published from 1918 to 1939.

In 1927 the Piper Verlag series “Was nicht im 'Baedeker” published his alternative travel guide “The Book of Vienna and Budapest”, which was also published in an English translation in 1929 under the title The Vienna, that's not in the Baedeker . Hirschfeld also wrote a large number of novels, plays and libretti and also worked as a translator of stage works and as a columnist.

From 1910 he directed the Viennese Possentheater "Max und Moritz" with Ferdinand Grünecker .

On November 6, 1942, he was deported with Transport 42 from the Drancy assembly camp , France, to Auschwitz , where he was murdered.

effect

Hirschfeld is mentioned by Karl Kraus in his monumental drama “ The Last Days of Mankind ” in scene 5/30 (in front of the Hotel Imperial). And in the torch Kraus writes critically: “With reference to the article by Ludwig Hirschfeld published in the number […] of August 12, 1917 of the 'Neue Freie Presse' under the heading 'Juliabend in Lemberg', I allow myself in the interest of the truth to politely request the publication of the following lines: I do not know how long Mr. Ludwig Hirschfeld spent in Lemberg [...]; one thing seems certain, however, that the premises on which he built his conclusions are fundamentally wrong. ”[Die Fackel 462, October 1917, p. 124f]

On the other hand, Hermann Broch put him in line with the local columnists Eduard Pötzl and Daniel Spitzer as early as 1921 . Felix Salten then summed up on the occasion of the publication of Hirschfeld's “The Book of Vienna and Budapest” in 1927 that he “almost always shows himself to be a writer with an extremely journalistic temperament”.
