Ludwig Hirzel (literary historian)

Ludwig Heinrich Caspar Hirzel (born February 23, 1838 in Zurich ; † June 1, 1897 in Bern ) was a Swiss literary historian.

Ludwig Hirzel, son of the theologian Ludwig Hirzel (1801–1841; "Commentary on Job", 1839;), studied in Zurich, Jena and Berlin, became a grammar school teacher in Frauenfeld in 1862, in 1866 a teacher at the cantonal school in Aarau and was a professor from 1874 of German language and literature at the University of Bern. In 1879/1880 he was rector of the university, in 1885 co-founder of the German seminar at the university and in 1888/1889 dean of the philosophy faculty.

He also edited Albrecht von Haller's poems (1882) and diaries (Leipzig 1883) as well as Salomon Hirzel's "Directory of a Goethe Library" (Leipzig 1884, with supplements and continuation).
