Ludwig Karbe (born April 27, 1933 in Lüneburg ; † January 16, 2019 in Moorrege ) was a German zoologist and lecturer at the Institute for Oceanography at the University of Hamburg . He was best known for his extensive research on the pollution of the North Sea and Elbe .

Life

Karbe was born in Lüneburg in April 1933 and completed basic courses in physics , chemistry and biology between 1952 and 1958 . In addition, he studied zoology , botany and fishery biology as a young graduate and received a diploma in biology.

Between 1959 and 1960 he worked as a scientific assistant at the Zoological Institute and Museum at the University of Hamburg . This was followed by his inaugural dissertation on the species phenomenon and the sterility of Anatolian cyprinodontids ( toothpies ).

Between 1961 and 1968 Karbe received, among other things, a research grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG) and was a visiting scientist at the State Institute for Sea Research and later a research grant for the special research program of the DFG "Water Research". Finally he moved from the Zoological Institute to the Institute for Hydrobiology and Fisheries Sciences at the University of Hamburg.

From 1972 Ludwig Karbe worked as a senior scientific adviser and between 1972 and 1998 as a lecturer in aquatic biology , limnology , oceanography as well as hydrochemistry and water toxicology.

In 1998 Karbe retired and continued to hold positions and duties at the DFG and the Institute for Oceanography at the University of Hamburg. In addition, he published more than 250 articles in his specialist fields alone and with various co-authors and was among other things co-author of Grzimek's animal life in 1970 and 1980 . In January 2019 he died in Moorrege.
