Ludwig Pfeiffer (born March 31, 1842 in Eisenach ; † May 9, 1921 in Weimar ) was a German doctor , prehistorian and coin collector .

Life

Pfeiffer studied medicine in Jena, Würzburg, Berlin, Prague and Vienna and received his doctorate in 1863 . During his studies in 1859 he became a member of the Arminia fraternity in the castle cellar . From 1866 he was in Weimar, where he became a secret medical advisor and from 1872 court physician to Grand Duchess Sophie. He was head of the Saxon Grand Ducal Vaccination Institute in Weimar, from 1885 district doctor and until 1908 head of the Weimar Sophien Hospital, which was inaugurated in 1886 (and previously head of the nursing home founded in 1877 to which the hospital belonged). When the cholera epidemic broke out in Weimar in 1865 and 1867, he was largely responsible for combating it by improving hygiene. He also fought for the rights of resident doctors in Thuringia (he created a close connection between the Thuringian doctors' representatives and the Leipzig Association, which later became the Hartmannbund ), earned nurse training and medical statistics. From 1873 he was editor of the correspondence sheet of the general medical association in Thuringia . Richard Strauss was one of his patients .

As a coin collector, he brought together a large collection on the history of the epidemics and also published in this area. As a prehistorian he was a student of Friedrich Klopfleisch and was involved in the excavations for the Palaeolithic in Ehringsdorf (finds of the Ehringsdorf prehistoric man from 1908). He published a book about the tools of the Stone Age, where he also did experimental archeology himself .

In 1888 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . The Pfeiffer spring near Weimar was named in his honor on his 75th birthday. Pfeiffer was a leader in the initiative for the restoration of the nearby main tower in 1909. Since 1995 the State Medical Association of Thuringia has awarded the Dr. Ludwig Pfeiffer Medal for services to health care.
