Karl Ludwig Scheeffer (born June 1, 1859 in Königsberg ; † June 11, 1885 in Munich ) was a German mathematician and university professor .

Life

Scheeffer first attended grammar school in Königsberg and then switched to grammar school in Berlin. In 1876 he began studying mathematics at the University of Heidelberg and pursued this further at the universities of Leipzig and Berlin . On March 1, 1880 he was finally at the Berlin University with the thesis About motion of rigid point systems in a flat n-fold manifold to Dr. phil. PhD . Since he did not initially see himself called to a university career, he passed the necessary examination for the teaching profession in the subjects of mathematics, physics, philosophical propaedeutics and descriptive natural sciences. Subsequently, at Easter 1881 , he began his educational trial year at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Berlin.

During his educational probationary year, Scheeffer realized that he wanted to dedicate his creative power to science. After a trip to the Alps that was necessary for health reasons, he moved to the University of Munich . There he completed his habilitation in 1883 or 1884 with the text About some specific integrals, viewed as functions of a complex parameter, and then became a private lecturer at Munich University. A short time later, at the age of 26, he died of typhus . Despite the brevity of his life and academic activity, he published a number of important papers and essays.
