Ludwig of Andok

Ludwig von Andok (* 11. January 1890 in Budapest ; † 9. April 1981 in Regensburg ) was a German painter of the Post-Impressionism .

Life

Von Andok grew up in Regensburg until he was eight and attended the Leopoldinum humanistic grammar school in Passau from 1900 to 1906 . As a native Hungarian, in the course of growing German nationalism from 1904 onwards, the good student who wanted to become a doctor was personally blamed for the "historical crimes of the Huns as their descendants". After the resulting violent follow-up by classmates, von Andok left grammar school prematurely, which also prevented him from working as a doctor. Nevertheless, the equivalent "ardent desire to become a painter" remained.

A 15-year civil servant career at the Donau-Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft (DDSG) in the Passau agency prevented von Andok from being able to devote himself primarily to painting. Family, professional and health circumstances did not allow this to be realized until 1925 in Regensburg.

plant

In around 1000 paintings, the artist captured Alpine motifs , later mainly the Upper Palatinate, in Airplein and alla prima fashion. The impasto application of paint, sometimes using a spatula technique, allows many a picture with changing daylight to appear in very different moods - in the morning there is fog over the foothills of the Alps, at noon the sun melts the snow on rock faces, in the evening a thunderstorm comes after a sultry summer's day. With his motifs and painting technique, von Andok is in the tradition of German impressionists such as Max Liebermann , Lovis Corinth or Max Slevogt .

In addition to the landscapes in delicate olive and blue-gray tones, sparsely interspersed with earth tones, there are also still lifes with flowers by Andoks. They are seldom placed in the middle, stand to the side and sometimes threaten to fall from their base. Sometimes overripe seeds and sometimes withering petals lie on the table; every plant is portrayed in its growth and decay.

The written estate of the artist, who was also active as a writer, consists of dozens of contemporary witness reports and hundreds of archive materials, which formed the basis for the first biography.
