Ludwig Adolf Heinrich von Strümpell (born June 28, 1812 in Schöppenstedt , † May 18, 1899 in Leipzig ) was a German philosopher and educator . He was a student of Johann Friedrich Herbart and a follower of Herbartianism .

He was born with Sophie Bielenstein, the sister of August Johann Gottfried Bielenstein (1826-1907), the famous German-Baltic explorer of the Latvian language and culture, married and had two children, Adolf and Emilie (Emilie was the mother of Emil Mattiesen ).

So far he is the only honorary citizen of his home community Schöppenstedt .

Life

Ludwig von Strümpell received his doctorate in 1833 at the University of Königsberg under Johann Friedrich Herbart on the subject of De methodo philosophica . Between 1835 and 1844 he was tutor for the children of the Count of Medem in Courland . In 1843 he completed his habilitation at the University of Dorpat on the subject of De summi boni natione, qualum proposuit Schleiermacherus dissertatio . From 1844 to 1871 he was a private lecturer at the university in Dorpat. Strümpell also founded a pedagogical seminar and gave lectures on philosophy, psychology and pedagogy. In 1849 he was appointed full professor at the university.

In 1865 Ludwig von Strümpell was appointed court councilor and later councilor of state by the Russian government in recognition of his services to the promotion of the Baltic German school system, and in 1870 he was raised to the nobility by them.

Between 1871 and 1899 Strümpell was a professor at the University of Leipzig . There he gave lectures on the history of philosophy, legal and religious philosophy, general and psychological pedagogy and pedagogical pathology, psychology, logic and ethics.

In 1899 Ludwig von Strümpell fell ill and died in Leipzig.
