Lists of aviation accidents

Lufthansa Cargo flight 8460 was an international cargo flight operated by the German cargo airline Lufthansa Cargo , which crashed on July 27, 2010 at 11:38 a.m. local time.

plane

The aircraft was a McDonnell Douglas MD-11F with the aircraft registration D-ALCQ, was delivered to Alitalia in 1993 as I-DUPB and converted into a cargo aircraft in 2004 . Up to the accident there had been 10,073 take-offs and around 73,200 flight hours. The last C-Check took place on June 22, 2006 and an A-Check was carried out immediately before the flight .

crew

The master had a total of 8,270 flight hours, 4,466 hours on the McDonnell Douglas MD-11F, the first officer had 3,444 flight hours, but only 219 on the McDonnell Douglas MD-11F.

the accident

The aircraft was en route from Frankfurt to Hong Kong with planned stopovers in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia and Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates .

When touching down on runway 33L in Riyadh, the machine touched down at a rate of descent of around 800 ft / min instead of the usual 120 ft / min. As a result, the machine ricocheted off and the wrong reaction of the crew, who pushed the control columns down instead of increasing the thrust and maintaining the angle of attack , steered it onto the runway at about 4.4 g . As a result of the impact, the aircraft broke up and a fire broke out in the hold.

In the further course of the landing, the aircraft came off to the left of the runway and burned out there. The crew was able to exit the aircraft via an escape slide. The master suffered minor injuries, while the first officer suffered a serious back injury.

examination

The final report states that one of the main causes is that the copilot approached with a sink rate that was too high and this error was not corrected by the master. In addition, the crew did not recognize the ricochet and reacted incorrectly. This made the plane hit harder.

Before the accident, the MD11 had already made further hard landings, whereupon new training was ordered.

The final report included recommendations for improving training and the response to a ricochet landing.
