Luigi's Mansion 2 ( Japanese original title: ル イ ー ジ マ ン シ ョ ン 2 Ruīji Manshon Tsū or Luigi Mansion 2 ; in North America: Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon ) is a video game that was developed by the Canadian game developer Next Level Games and published by Nintendo . It is the successor to Luigi's Mansion . The game was released on March 20, 2013 in Japan and Europe, the USA and Australia a few days later for the Nintendo 3DS . As in the predecessor, the player does not take control of Mario , but his brother Luigi .

On October 31, 2019, the successor Luigi's Mansion 3 was released exclusively for Nintendo Switch.

action

The story of Luigi's Mansion 2 continues the plot of the predecessor. King Buu Huu has managed to free himself from Prof. I. Gidd's captivity and is now looking for revenge. Gidd does research in Nightshade Valley and is supported by the friendly spirits of the valley. However, King Buu Huu destroys the dark moon, the only reason for the friendliness of the spirits in the valley. The ghosts then go wild and devastate Gidd's laboratory. Gidd flees in panic and was able to save himself in his second laboratory. He contacts Luigi and brings him to his laboratory with his latest invention, the “Voxelporter”. He receives the new Schreckweg 09/15, a vacuum cleaner for ghosts, from the somewhat crazy professor, and goes on his way. In the course of the game it becomes clear that King Buu Huu, like in the first part, kidnapped Mario again and locked him in a painting.

Game mechanics

The game mechanics are largely similar to the mechanics of the predecessor. Luigi is equipped with the successor of the Schreckweg 08/16, the Schreckweg 09/15. This is a vacuum cleaner that has been upgraded to vacuum up ghosts. To scare the ghosts, Luigi also has a flashlight (with a so-called strobe lightning ) and a so- called dark lamp , with which various secrets can be discovered.

In order to defeat a ghost, Luigi normally first has to blind him and then suck it up with his terrifying path. Each spirit has a different length of life bar that determines how long it takes to suck up. Later bosses can also demand slightly different tactics.

The play area is divided into a total of five areas, in each of which a piece of the dark moon must be found, which is guarded by a master spirit. As soon as this has been defeated, the next area is unlocked.

In addition, this time the various tasks are divided into missions that can be repeated as often as required, for example to improve the amount of coins collected, or to find all the jewels hidden in the levels, 13 of which are hidden per chapter.

Multiplayer mode

In addition to the action mode for single games, a multiplayer mode is also included. Up to four players compete against each other online or locally, for which only one game is required if necessary and the remaining participants are added via a download game , in order to fight ghosts together. To distinguish the individual players, Luigi wears clothes of different colors. In addition to the normal floors, there are also some boss fights to fight.

reception

Luigi's Mansion 2 received mostly good reviews and achieved an average rating of 86 out of 100 points at Metacritic .
