Luigi Di Bella

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Luigi Di Bella (born July 17, 1912 in Linguaglossa ; † July 1, 2003 in Modena ) was an Italian doctor and physiologist who became known in Italy and beyond due to controversial therapy recommendations for cancer. In 1997 and 1998, his therapy was the subject of much discussion, and his house was besieged for weeks by cancer patients and relatives seeking help. Conspiracy theories are also built around his views , stating that his therapy would be suppressed by scientific medicine in order not to endanger the spread of other therapies. These views are particularly popular in right-wing Italian circles and were promoted by the post-fascist national conservative party AN . Several organizations of followers (also called Dibelliani ) were formed in Italy who campaign for his therapy.

Di Bella's therapy recommendations are not recognized by modern medicine.

Life

Luigi Di Bella was born in Linguaglossa (Province of Catania ), studied medicine at the University of Bari and became a doctor in 1936. He subsequently became a lecturer in physiology at the University of Parma , later at the University of Modena . He retired in 1984, but then ran his own private research laboratory in which he also treated patients. In 2003 Di Bella died in Modena.

Di Bella's controversial therapy

Di Bella's treatment method is to be understood as a hormone therapy against cancer, which also includes vitamin supplements . The hormones somatostatin and melatonin are therefore able to cure cancer. Occasionally ACTH as well as cyclophosphamide and hydroxyurea were also integrated.

Di Bella's remedies are also sent from Switzerland to interested parties.

criticism

The illegal trade in somatostatin at high prices was under the control of mafia supporters for a time when Di Bella's therapy recommendations became public. Somatostatin was temporarily sold out and unavailable throughout Italy. A commission of inquiry set up by the Italian government and scientific studies came to the conclusion that the Di-Bella procedure in cancer is ineffective or has only a low effectiveness.

Melatonin is said to have a certain anti-cancer effect due to its action against free radicals, but the quantities required for this effect have serious consequences on sleep. A disorder of sexual development would be expected in childhood. Melatonin would have to be taken in high concentrations over many years in order to have a preventive effect. A curative effect is scientifically unknown.
