Luis Batlle Ibáñez
Luis Batlle Ibáñez (born October 19, 1930 in Montevideo , Uruguay , † May 25, 2016 in USA ) was a Uruguayan pianist .
He is the son of Uruguayan President Luis Batlle Berres and Matilde Ibáñez and brother of President Jorge Batlle . Batlle Ibáñez, whose first piano teacher was Victoria Schenini, completed his training at the Conservatorio Kolischer in his native city, with Yves Nat in Paris and Rudolf Serkin in the USA. In 1947 he received the title of piano teacher . Four years later he won the Fundación Chopin Prize . Since 1956 he has participated regularly in the Marlboro Festival in the USA, founded by his teacher Rudolf Serkin . Upon invitation, he took part in the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1974 and, two years later, in the International Bach Competition in Washington. From 1964 to 1978 he was piano teacher and director of the Conservatorio Kolischer. After settling in the United States in 1978 and still returning to Montevideo annually, he was a permanent pianist at Marlboro College in Vermont and at the Longy School of Music in Boston .
Recordings were made at Telefunken in both Germany and Uruguay . His works have also appeared on the record labels Columbia and Marlboro Recording Society in the USA. Batlle Ibáñez has played as a soloist and as part of chamber and symphony orchestras in Latin America, Europe, the Soviet Union and Israel and has also performed with the Vermeer Quartet in the USA . He has given numerous solo concerts in the USA, for example, at New York's Carnegie Hall and at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington . In 1999 he received The Walter Cerf Award for Lifetime Achievements in the Arts . He was also awarded the Critics' Prize in Montevideo for his recordings of the Mozart and Haydn sonatas.
