Luis Zapata Quiroz (born April 27, 1951 in Chilpancingo , Guerrero state , Mexico ) is a Mexican writer , editor and translator . He is the most important openly gay writer in Mexico.

Live and act

Zapata came from a middle-class background and grew up in a rural region of the state of Guerrero. During his youth he was very interested in art, began to write plays and regularly visited the local cinema, which enabled him to escape from the dreary and sometimes dangerous everyday life in dream worlds.

He studied French at the Universidade Nacional de Autonomia and published his first book in 1975. Since then he has been a fixture in the gay book sector in Mexico and Latin America . He has received many awards, was the editor of various magazines and, among other things, translate Adolfo Caminha into Mexican Spanish .

Almost without exception, his books deal with the topics of homosexuality , bisexuality , identity, gay incest , and hermaphroditism in an almost plastic language. A work is shaped by the everyday world, the wishes of homosexuals and also American pop culture . Women appear - if at all - only as sisters or mothers. The machismo and the secrecy of many homosexuals who take refuge in marriage are also addressed in numerous works. Many of his works have autobiographical references. Some stories have also been translated into English, but not yet into German. Since 2007 the author has been quiet.
