Luise Ey

Luise Ey (born February 18, 1854 in Eichsfeld in Thuringia ; † May 17, 1936 in Pinneberg near Hamburg ) was a German philologist , translator and Romance scholar with a focus on Portuguese language and literature ( Lusitanist ).

Life

First, Ey was a piano teacher in Berlin, then went to Lübeck, where she passed her state examination as a teacher. She then worked as a teacher in Karlsruhe for two years.

After a stay in Paris, she went to Porto in 1883 to teach French at the German school there. She lived in Portugal until 1896, where she deepened her knowledge of the local language and literature.

Since her return to Germany, she spread the Portuguese language and literature there.

She was also friends with another important Lusitanist and Romanist, namely Carolina Michaëlis de Vasconcelos .

Between 1905 and 1906 she lived again in Portugal.

From 1909 to 1923 she taught Portuguese at various universities in Hamburg and translated several Portuguese authors into German, such as B. José Maria Eça de Queiroz , the most famous.

She was a corresponding member of the Geographical Society of Lisbon since 1908. In 1924 she received the "Santiago Order" in Portugal for her services to Portuguese culture.

Together with Carolina Michaelis de Vasconcelos and Ray-Güde Mertin , she is considered one of the most important Lusitanists in Germany.
