history

The Berlin Education and Industry Institute was founded on September 9, 1807 by the provost of the Petrikirche , Gottfried August Ludwig Hanstein , the banker Jacob Herz Beer and the architect Ludwig Friedrich Catel . The protectorate was taken over by the Prussian Queen Luise , who also agreed that the institution could bear the name Luisenstift .

Boys at risk of neglect were offered elementary education, in higher grades geography, history and natural history and practical preparation for a career. About 60 boys between seven and ten years of age could be admitted, who were aged up to 14/15 Year of life were taught.

The Luisenstift was initially housed in the building of the old provost office of the Nikolaikirche in Propstgasse. In 1838 the company was able to move to its own house on Husarenstrasse (from 1857 Hollmannstrasse). The building was made available by the city council and patron Carl Friedrich Hollmann . This was followed by an eventful history in the 20th century, with moves to Limonenstraße in Groß-Lichterfelde , Weddingenweg in Lichterfelde and finally in 1932 to today's property. In 1945 the building was destroyed, in 1957 the foundation stone was laid for a new building on the old site and on July 20, 1959 the new Luisenstift was inaugurated as a dormitory for male youth. In 1997 the entire building was rebuilt and modernized.

During the January battles of 1919 ( Spartacus uprising ) Gustav Noske set up his quarters here as commander-in-chief of the government in order to act as the organizer of the Freikorps against revolutionary Berlin.
