Luka Jeran (born October 16, 1818 in Javorje (German: Afriach) near Bischoflack , Upper Carniola ; † April 25, 1896 in Laibach ) was a Slovenian missionary and religious poet, writer and editor.

Life

Jeran attended high schools in Karlstadt (Croatia) and Laibach. From 1840 to 1842 he studied Slavic languages ​​and then theology at the seminary. He was ordained a priest in 1846 and became a chaplain in Poljane (near Bischoflack), Horjul and Laibach. In 1853 and 1854 he traveled to Africa as a missionary , but returned sick both times. He was appointed papal chamberlain in 1869 and canon of the cathedral in 1882 .

He had already joined the Illyrian movement in Karlstadt and corresponded with Stanko Vraz . From 1843 he published patriotic and religious poems in newspapers (he was the editor of Zgodnja Danica ), which are of no particular literary value.

As an employee of Janez Bleiweis , he wrote religious and educational specialist articles as well as literary contributions in which, among other things, he rejected dealing with eroticism. Therefore he was an opponent of Prešeren and promoted intolerance.

As a patron of the youth studying in Ljubljana, he founded a school kitchen around 1880.
