The Lukaskirche Graal-Müritz is the church of the Evangelical Lutheran Lukaskirchgemeinde in the Seeheilbad Graal-Müritz . The parish belongs to the Rostock provost in the Mecklenburg parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany ( Northern Church ).

history

In 1867, when Graal and Müritz were still two separate villages, the monastery pastor Friedrich Bunge († 1889 in Garwitz ) from neighboring Ribnitz initiated a new church in Graal. Bunges' various attempts failed because of the higher church authorities, until Grand Duke Friedrich Franz IV of Mecklenburg-Schwerin got a hearing and also campaigned for the construction of a church. Bunge was honored for his perseverance on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the parish fair with a memorial stone located in front of the east side of the church.

The first negotiations on the construction began in 1903, and in 1908 construction began under the direction of the secret court building officer Gotthilf Ludwig Möckel , who also designed the Gelbensande hunting lodge in the immediate vicinity . St. Luke's Church was inaugurated on October 18, 1908 in the presence of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz IV of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and his wife Alexandra . Until the building was completed, all church activities, even confirmation classes, took place in Ribnitz-Damgarten . The grand ducal couple acted as godparents for the first two children baptized in the church, who were named Friedrich Franz and Alexandra in his honor.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary, the church building was named " Lukas Church" on the day of St. Luke's Remembrance , October 18, 2008, in the presence of Regional Bishop Andreas von Maltzahn .

Building description

West gable

The sacred building is designed in the neo-Romanesque style . The tower height and the total length of the Lukaskirche are each 26 meters; the church is 12 meters wide. The nave is 15 x 9.5 x 8.5 meters (length, width, height). A special feature is the church tower on the east side , which was built in contrast to the west facing position that has been typical since the 12th century. Möckel justified this choice for "aesthetic reasons": The tower served as a landmark for visitors who approached the church from Rostock . However, this line of sight is no longer visible today.

Above the entrance there is a reference to John 1, 29 with the image of a sacrificial lamb (“See, this is God's Lamb who bears the sin of the world!”). The four evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are depicted on the glass windows on the north side, but without their typical symbols. The altarpiece makes reference to the Lord's Supper with its depictions of flowers, the fan-like ears and the vine . The church has three bells, two of which did not survive the chaos of war and were re-cast in 1952 and 1956 respectively. The church organ comes from the court organ builder Carl Börger from Rostock . A cemetery belongs to the church.
