Garwitz is a part of the community Lewitzrand in the district of Ludwigslust-Parchim in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

geography

Garwitz is about nine kilometers northwest of the district town Parchim and 24 kilometers southeast of Schwerin on the edge of the Lewitz . The Elde and an oxbow lake of this river run south of the village . The location is surrounded by meadows and arable land in the west and south. In the east there is a larger forest area. The flat terrain falls from about 44 m above sea level. NHN in the north of the built-up area to about 38 meters towards the Elde.

Lock in Garwitz

The first written mention as Garseviz comes from the year 1278. The Gothic church was built in the 14th century. The lock was built between 1891 and 1894. The bridge to the neighboring town of Matzlow , which dates back to 1922, was blown up on May 4, 1945 by German troops. The replacement building was opened as early as 1951. Since 1958, renovation work in the Lewitz has had a decisive impact on the area's surroundings. The outdoor pool opened in 1965. In the same year Matzlow and Garwitz merged to form the Matzlow-Garwitz community.

At the same time as the local elections held in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on June 7, 2009, the communities of Matzlow-Garwitz, Raduhn and Klinken united to form the new community of Lewitzrand.

The Gothic village church Garwitz with a three-sided east end was built as St. Mary's Church in the 15th century. The free-standing belfry to the west of the church was restored in 1996 and has two bells from 1453 and 1954. The interior of the church includes an altarpiece in the form of a Gothic winged shrine from the 15th century, which was taken over from Crivitz , and an organ loft with carved figures in the parapet, which comes from a former altar shrine, and a chandelier from 1714.

In addition to the church with its belfry and bells, there is a farmhouse, two Büdnereien, the rectory with barn, stable and wall, another barn, the war memorial 1914/18 and the war memorial as well as the sluice on the outskirts of the village, which are listed as historical monuments.

State road 9 runs through Garwitz from Crivitz to Parchim. Kreisstraße 66 provides a connection to the towns of Alt Damerow and Domsühl to the east . The nearest train station on the Ludwigslust – Parchim line is in Spornitz . The federal motorway 24 is reached via the Neustadt-Glewe connection in 13 kilometers. During the season, the Elde lock is mainly frequented by recreational captains and sport boats.

There is an open-air swimming pool operated by the community near the lock and a holiday complex further east. At the confluence of the Elde oxbow lake into the Elde, there has been a marina with 45 boat berths since 1998/99 .
