Lulach

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lulach (Lulach mac Gillai Comgain; * around 1029; † March 17, 1058 ) was King of Scotland from 1057 until his death. Lulach was the son of Gruoch , the granddaughter of Kenneth III. , and Gilla Coemgáin, Mormaer (or Count ) of Moray . After his death, Gruoch married Macbeth and was given the name Lady Macbeth. Macbeth had usurped the Scottish crown in 1040 by killing King Duncan I. Malcolm, son of Duncan and future King Malcolm III. , who lived in exile at the English court, tried in 1057 with English help to recapture the crown.

Urged by Macbeth's followers, Lulach, who was nicknamed "the Simple" and "the Fool" (the fool), took power until 1058. Allegedly he was crowned in August 1057 at Scone Abbey in Perthshire . He is the first Scottish king known to have been crowned. Lulach could not long resist Malcolm's will to conquer. After a few months of reign, he died a violent death on March 17, 1058 in an ambush near Essie , Aberdeenshire , like his stepfather Macbeth before him.

Lulach was the last representative of the House of Alpin and thus the last King of Scotland in direct Celtic tradition. From his marriage to Fimmghuala of Angus he left a son, Maelsnectan (also: Malsnechtai), but he is said to have chosen a life in the monastery. Other sources claim, however, that Lulach's son lived in the resistance for a long time with the support of the men of Moray. A daughter, Aed of Moray, is also attested.
