House Alpin
The House of Alpin was a dynasty of Scottish kings who ruled Scotland from 843 to 1058 . The name is derived from Alpin von Kyntire , King of Dalriada , the first ruler to unite Scotland. His son Kenneth I founded the dynasty.
The history of the house of Alpin was marked by civil wars and unrest, as well as conflicts with the Picts and England . Of the 19 kings of this house, only the first two died of natural causes while in power. The remainder were deposed or mostly killed, either in battles or by murder in the course of a coup.
One possible explanation for the violence in this era is the use of the tanistry system for succession to the throne. The king was chosen from a selection of different members of the royal family; the crown did not automatically pass to the eldest son. This system constantly led to conspiracies in the struggle for power. The drama Macbeth by William Shakespeare refers loosely to these troubled times, especially the reign of King Macbeth .
The dynasty of Scottish kings that followed was the House of Dunkeld . It was made by Malcolm III. founded, a son of Duncan I.
