Lunalilo
Lunalilo , born as William Charles Lunalilo (born January 31, 1835 in Pohukaina, Oʻahu , Kingdom of Hawaii ; † February 3, 1874 ) was King of Hawaii from January 8, 1873 until his death . He was a distant descendant of Kamehameha I.
Life
Kamehameha V died in 1872 as the last of his dynasty. Since there was no legal successor, a king was elected to crown a nobleman of the country as king. Lunalilo, who was 38 years old at the time and was very popular with the population, was elected king in this referendum and took office on January 1, 1873.
Lunalilo died just 13 months after his coronation. David Kalākaua was elected as his successor .
