Luther against the Pope (also: Luther's fight against the Pope ) is a documentary film from 2004 that was directed by Jean-François Delassus .

The documentary is a mixture of documentation and docufiction

content

The documentary begins with a description of the world in which Luther grew up. It also describes how Luther becomes an Augustinian monk, how he begins as a monk to attack the Pope because of the indulgence trade, how he finally denies the infallibility of the papacy and how ultimately, as the commentator of the documentation explains, the unity of Christianity is broken.

The question of who Luther really was should be answered in fictional game scenes. A tormented soul? A devoted pastor or an intolerant figure?

background

The film was produced by ARTE France in collaboration with Point du Jour Production.

The German version was produced by allias film & sprachtransfer in collaboration with Taurus Synchron . The commentary, which was made by Bernard-Pierre Donnadien in the French version , is made by Christian Rode in the German version .

A preview of the film took place on September 27, 2004 in the presence of Federal President Horst Köhler . The actual premiere took place on October 24, 2004 on ARTE . Since then, the film has been repeated on television several times.

Speculative scenes

  • The documentary fiction uses excerpts from the Luther films: Martin Luther (GDR 1983) , Martin Luther (1953) and from Luther - A Film of the German Reformation . From the last one, a scene was used in which a schoolboy who definitely does not represent Luther is beaten up by his teacher. In the documentation, this image material is used with the note that Luther was brought up very strictly by his father and sometimes did this with lashes, but at the same time enabled him to get a good education.
  • The scene in which Luther begs also has strong speculative elements.
  • In one scene, Luther and his guests, seated at the table, talk about the discovery of America. The portrayed Luther is asked how one should treat the natives. He immediately gives an answer by referring to the Sola scriptura . The scene has no historical basis. So the scene is speculative.
  • The friend of Luther's Lucas Cranach the Elder. Ä. do not resist the attraction of the Germans for the shadow forces, so the commentator of the film. This speculative claim is made in the film regarding Lucas Cranach's pictures.
